Shakur Stevenson dominates Oscar Valdez to unify world super featherweight titles as Canelo Alvarez watches and brings up comparisons to Floyd Mayweather loss

Shakur Stevenson proved his pound-for-pound boxing star status with a stunning unanimous decision victory over Oscar Valdez on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

The 24-year-old American dominated his world-class opponent to unify the WBC and WBO world super featherweight titles, while winning the Ring Magazine belt.

It was a one sided fight from start to finish as Shakur took control with his jab in the very first round.

He used his size and superior boxing ability to keep Valdez at bay for the majority of the contest.

In round six, Shakur scored a knockdown by knocking his opponent out and then making him pay.

For the remainder of the fight, he saw victory overall as Valdez tried valiantly for a knockout but failed to do so.

When the scorecards were read at the end of the fight, Shakur was announced the winner by unanimous decision: 117-110, 118-109, 118-109.

Canelo Alvarez watched from the ring in support of stablemate Valdez.

He was hoping for a win for his fellow Mexican, but instead witnessed a fight that evoked memories of his own loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.

Shakur said after the fight: “I told you all what I was going to do.

“I said I was going to beat Oscar Valdez, Eddy Reynoso and Canelo.

“No disrespect to them, but that was my game plan.

“Oscar Valdez is a tough champion. He will be champion after this.

He then got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend in the ring.

Valdez reflected, “He has great boxing skills, that’s all. He was just the better fighter tonight.

“He’s a great fighter.”
