A significant Spider-Man Easter egg in Sony’s Morbius film sets him as potentially their version of Tony Stark – essential to their shared universe.
sony Morbius the film contains a subtle Spider Man Easter egg that could make the film an essential part of Sony’s shared universe. Starring Jared Leto as the titular vampire, Morbius is one of the most curious superhero films coming out this year. Many viewers have wondered why Michael Morbius – who lacks anything near Venom’s exposure – is a priority for Sony.
The trailers for Morbius teased Morbius as a dark antihero whose experiments to cure himself of a rare blood disease turn him into a vampire instead. Surprisingly, the trailers have frequently referenced Spider-Man, including graffiti making Spider-Man a murderer. More recent trailers showed Morbius sweeping across a city skyline, with the Horizon Labs logo in the background. In the comics, Horizon was renowned for researching advanced technology and even employed Peter Parker for a time. It was generally assumed to be nothing more than an easter egg, but it turns out that it could actually be a major plot point.
Sony started promoting the Morbius movie on their official daily bugle TikTok account. The latest video, from social media intern Nicque Marina, sees her discussing how Michael Morbius has just turned down a major science award. Discussing Morbius, she reveals that he is the world’s foremost expert on blood diseases, the inventor of “synthetic blood,“and apparently he’s actually director of”the prestigious Horizon Labs.Presumably, Morbius will attempt to deal with his vampire mutation using Horizon’s technology, possibly using this synthetic blood. This is a particularly interesting move, because in the comics, Horizon Labs links Morbius to Spider-Man himself- same.
In the comics, Peter Parker worked for Horizon for a time and used their gear to design technology that helped him function more effectively than ever as Spider-Man – even including a fun tron-Spider-Man inspired costume with stealth abilities. Much to his surprise, Spider-Man learned that he wasn’t the only superhuman working at Horizon; they had actually employed Michael Morbius, who was effectively using their facilities in an attempt to cure himself of his vampiric condition.
Morbius clearly riffs on this idea – but adapting it somewhat, making Horizon Morbius the company’s own. This may well explain why Sony prioritizes Morbius; because his role as director of Horizon Labs makes him a powerful player in their common universe. He’s the man with access to cutting-edge technology, which could be incorporated into any number of origin stories for both heroes and villains. Amusingly, there have been recent reports that Sony is considering their next Madame Web movie to set up their version of Doctor Strange, but Morbius could potentially become their answer to Tony Stark. Morbius has never played such a big role in the comics, but this twist from Horizon Labs suggests that Sony might have real ambition for its future.
