Chandigarh: Led by Indian duo Amritpal Singh and Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, the Ahmedabad Wingers won their second straight 3BL Conference B title.
The undersized Lucknow Ligers were no match for the Wingers anchored by the 7ft tall Amritpal Singh. The Wingers’ 21-10 margin of victory in the final was identical to their group stage victory against the same opponents.
At the start, the Ligers tried to go neck and neck, trailing 6-7. But Wingers backup Gurbaaz Singh Sandhu, who replaced injured Rajan Sharma on the team, hit two straight runs to put the game out.
Afterwards, the international duo of Bhriguvanshi and Amritpal completed the formalities for an easy double-digit win. “My team is good. It’s not just about me. We have the most experienced Vishesh (Bhriguvanshi) who has helped me a lot in playing both attack and defense. Our strategy is to play hard, put in the effort and win,” said Amritpal, who was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) for this round.
Stars of Kochi win the women’s 2nd round
Defending champions Kochi Stars opened their 3BL Women’s League account, winning their first ‘Round’ title. Under national team center Stephy Nixon, the Kochi Stars survived a tough challenge from the Pune Panthers. The Panthers were wanted for the final by their young Maharashtrian star Durga Dharmadhikari.
However, in the title game, it was Nixon who marked his class. The much larger Nixon was unstoppable in the paint. From the start, Kochi Stars built up a massive 14-7 lead. Nixon was well helped by outside shots and difficult lay-ups from goalkeeper Divyani Gangwal. The panthers were kept afloat by the tireless Dharmadhikari who was all over the ground despite the scorching afternoon heat. His long two runs reduced Kochi’s lead to less than four, but in the end it was a comfortable 19-15 victory for the southern team.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Nixon came to Kochi to beat the Delhi Divas of Raspreet Sidhu in a thrilling 17-15 overtime match.
